Environmental Photographer Africa

Environmental Photographer Africa

As an environmental photographer in Africa, I specialize in documenting the breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and pressing environmental challenges across the continent. Through my lens, I aim to showcase the urgent need for conservation efforts and raise awareness about the environmental issues we face today.

Environmental Photographer Africa: Capturing the Heart of Conservation

Environmental photographers like myself are visual storytellers who bridge the gap between the natural world and humanity, capturing the beauty and fragility of our planet. My focus as an African environmental photographer is to connect viewers with the stunning wilderness that surrounds us, emphasizing the delicate balance between human activity and nature. These images serve as powerful reminders of our responsibility to protect these landscapes for future generations.

A key part of my mission is to support the efforts of organizations such as the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve in South Africa. This non-profit organization is dedicated to ecological restoration and protection, engaging in vital restoration and monitoring activities. One of their goals is to establish ecological corridors to connect critical spaces for wildlife, which is especially important in the face of climate change.

Monitoring Ecological Health: A Vital Effort in Africa’s Biodiversity Protection

The Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of Africa’s ecosystems. Through initiatives like river health monitoring and fish species assessment, this organization helps ensure that aquatic and terrestrial environments remain intact. Notable efforts include seasonal biomonitoring along the Goukou River using SASS5 and mini-SASS, which provides insights into the state of aquatic ecosystems and the health of river systems.

Collaboration with partners like the Grootvadersbosch Conservancy and the South African Institute of Aquatic Biodiversity (NRF-SAIAB) has enabled extensive fish species monitoring to track the movement of both endemic and invasive species along the Goukou River system. This ongoing work, which includes seasonal fish assessments, contributes to understanding the ecological balance of riverine environments.

In addition to aquatic monitoring, the restoration and ongoing monitoring of Broomvlei Wetland are essential for preserving biodiversity and supporting the ecological integrity of the Goukou River catchment. The health of these habitats plays a vital role in safeguarding endangered species like Galaxias sp. nov. ‘Goukou’, as well as ensuring water security and the preservation of the Goukou Estuary, which serves as a crucial fish sanctuary within the Stilbaai Marine Protected Area.

Promoting Action Through Photography: A Call to Action

As an environmental photographer in Africa, my work is not only about capturing striking images of nature but also about advocating for the preservation of these invaluable ecosystems. Through my photography, I aim to spark a deeper understanding of the importance of conservation and inspire action to protect the natural world. My images reflect the urgent need for wildlife preservation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable practices to safeguard Africa’s wilderness.

By documenting the beauty and fragility of our planet, I hope to encourage viewers to take part in meaningful conservation efforts. The connection between humans and nature has never been more crucial, and as an environmental photographer in Africa, I am committed to being part of the movement to protect our environment for the future.

Corporate Portrait Photography

Business and Corporate Portrait Photography

Business and Corporate Portrait Photography
Corporate portraits and headshots are a simple yet effective and important tool for individuals and businesses to manage their profile and image.

Professional corporate Portrait Photography gives potential customers confidence about your business. Portrait Photography also gives a clear message about your culture and ethos as a business. Consistency and professionalism are critical for all portrait photography but there is an opportunity through the styling and wardrobe used, to give a message that tells customers what they can expect when interacting with the person and business. A good company portrait must also be consistent and adhere to company standards, must be easy to isolate and use on different backgrounds, and should convey the company culture.

Corporate Team Portrait Photography
Do you need professional business headshots and portraits for your company or team? We can provide team portraits for your company in the studio or at your offices.

Studio portraits are best for individuals or small groups, but can be inconvenient and difficult to coordinate for larger groups. Shooting on-site is ideal for larger group headshot sessions. Mobile onsite business photography takes place in an open area where we set up the selected backdrop and professional mobile lighting equipment. Shoot durations vary depending on the number of portraits, type and style of headshot portraits being produced, and the amount of time each individual being photographed has available. It is important to consider the room size for the shoot. The smaller the room available, the wider the lens that is required and this can cause undesirable facial distortion. The minimum room size is 5m x 3.5m but a room of 7m x 4m or larger is recommended if possible. A ceiling height of at least 3m is recommended if possible but 2.4m can be used if necessary. Image Retouching and Editing – All corporate portraits photoshoots include a number of professionally retouched and edited images.

Contact Colin Stephenson and let me customise a package for your business to deliver consistent and professional photographic portraits to make your profile shine.

Social documentary photography

Editorial & Social documentary photography.
Editorial and social documentary photography aims to tell a story through photos. Literally aiming at the pictures telling 1000 words.

Editorial & social documentary photography can be found in books and magazines, but also on websites, newspapers, and even a presentation during a conference. The aim of editorial photography is supposed to illustrate, inform, and educate.

Editorial photographers can stage and produce an image, so there’s more creative control than other types of photography like documentary or journalism.

Social documentary photographers can not stage and must capture the moment that defines an image, tells the story and makes great journalism.

And you’re not executing a client’s idea like you do in commercial photography. Although, you are going to be on assignment so you do need to follow the briefing.

Just remember that social documentary style means that images should look natural and tell the message in the best possible way.

There are many types of social documentary & editorial photographers, you can specialize in news and events or studio images recreating real-life situations.

For all Photography requirements contact Colin Stephenson, 072 601 0985

What Is Editorial Photography? Editorial photography refers to images that run alongside text in publications to help tell a story or educate readers. For example, a feature story about a new Theatre production or play might include images of the cast, the décor, and the performances.

Colin Stephenson’s editorial photos documented a small town we know so well, Sedgefield, Garden Route, South Africa. Where all are welcome & equal. We enjoy the magic restorative powers of fresh air, salt and freshwater activities and magic potion! Hmm sounds like another Gaulish dorp from 50 B.C. But that would fit with the amazing entertainment provided held in gatherings under starry skies to the cries of our cacophonous bards. By our very own, much loved local Thespians. I know you may want to look up that words’ meaning – and it’s not what you thought! But I read your dirty little mind. It means those who love Willie Wikkel Spies.

Bomber Webb, Nita Allsopp and Gareth Pretorius are such creatures who bring the best of Shakespeare to life in a bare bones theatre where no tricks of smoke mirror or lighting can be used to hide the raw exuberance of these amazingly talented actors. Indeed no smoke or mirrors are required as they play out the cloak and daggers in humours and action packed hysterics!

Editorial photography can be found in books and magazines, but also on websites, newspapers, and even a presentation during a conference. The thing is that editorial photography is supposed to illustrate, inform, and educate.

Editorial photographers can stage and produce an image, so there’s more creative control than other types of photography like documentary or journalism.

And you’re not executing a client’s idea like you do in commercial photography. Although, you are going to be on assignment so you do need to follow the briefing.

Just remember that editorial style means that images should look natural and tell the message in the best possible way.

There are many types of editorial photographers, you can specialize in news and events or studio images recreating real-life situations.

So we raise a Skull of the finest locally brewed amber nectar of the Gods to toast these 3 fine actors who did no hamming to elucidate and educate us about the best Willie Wikkel Spies has to offer. Thanks, three Cheers and please do it again and again and again!

Event Photography Garden Route

The last Freshly Ground concert in Knysna, Garden Route, South Africa rendered some really energetic event photography.
Real and raw moments captured in a photo-documentary photographic style by Colin Stephenson. Real moments are important, and this is why I take a non-intrusive approach to photographing your event or wedding day as I prefer to capture those ‘real’ and unposed moments. For the portrait and couple photographs we will need to step out and grab the perfect evening light.

My work is about so much more than creating a series of pinterest perfect images. Its about the real experiences of your event or wedding day. The moments of laughter, and the moments when the emotions become too much. Moments of love, silliness and those moments of complete and utter euphoria.. The missed moments and the love shared between two families and close friends.

I love meeting people and would love to tell your wedding story as honestly as possible.
Please feel free to contact Colin Stephenson for information, pricing for event and wedding photography.
